QC:
Acer palmatum dissectum ‘Waterfall’...available occasionally, at various garden joints around western NC. I could rec'd a few that tend to have a better selection of Japanese maples, (acer palmatum), via PM, if you wish.

We have several varieties of acer p. around the 'yard', though it takes some site 'looking' and luck to grow them 'up here'. They also tend to get zapped every few years in 'Spring' during the occasional last hard freezes in late April/early May. For those of you in the lower climes, this is seldom a problem. The particluar acer p., green waterfall, has been in that location for 8+ years, and has had its fanny blasted by hard freezes a few times, but has hung in. I prune it very carefully but rigorously to maintain that low, compact shape. It will not like all day sun; prefers morning or very filtered afternoon sun, and some shade and wind protection. A 'corner tuck in' is often best 'site'.

The birds here, (we have dozens of varieties), don't seem to care about the fruit on the Oregon Grape bushes. The coons do like them however, but the very sharp holly looking leaves tend to keep them from climbing the plant stalks too often.

EasilyAmused: funny stuff. We are doing the same, minus vino, (too early), though power is out, and the whole house Generac is running hard. We were supposed to chase the ball today at our club's big 4th 'to do', but course is closed and has 'rivers' running down the fairways. 5+ inches of rain up here, this month, in 3 1/2 days...we need a few days 'off' from rain, imo.

Thanx MD, made a note of the name and will check my fave local nurseries. It would look good at a corner I have that gets late afternoon sun ... love the look with a standing flat rock behind it.

( Just brought the uncovered trash barrel in during a pause in the downpour, and guessing, there was at least 3 or 4 inches of rain in the bottom since 9 am today. )

Default Changeable Skies...

Still soaked up here on the Mtn. A trio of shots from last eve, showing the very changeable skies, looking from our deck. All shot in ~hour time frame. Thanks for looking!

Sunshine broke through for 5 mins, across the Balsam Mtns. Green as Ireland:

Then the next batch of what seems like continual storm/rain clouds swept in, looking at Wolfpen Mtn and Cold Mtn:

And then, the rain dropped across the valley:

wow, thanks for the wonderful pics MD - BTW, how much rain have you received in the past week? (we've received about 7 1/2 inches in the Upstate - amazing summer...)

My neighbor, a weather nut with a serious azz weather 'station' of equipment, tells me we have had 12.4 inches for July alone.
A full 36 hrs now, with no rain, though it is like New Guinea down below on our club track at ~3,000 ft, and even el mug oh, up here. Thanks for the props...

Default Storm Clouds Over the Mtns...

Yesterday late afternoon, the storm clouds built up over the mtns across the valley. The earl eve sun was shining right on the cloud bank: it was so bright I had to shoot in Manual Mode and underexpose about 2-3 stops to not 'blow out' the clouds.

We then had very strong rain, some hail and big boomers a few mins later, but not from this batch; from a 'pop up' green blob that came out of nowhere weather radar-wise.

Waiting on more this afternoon...can hardly wait.
The only thing I am afraid of is lightning.
Thanks for looking!

Nice sunlight on the far away areas up the slope of Mt Pisgah, and The Cold Mtn is lit well, too...

Default motordavid's photos

Once again, many thanks for those photos. I love the cloud formations against the blue sky, and I also love the green of the mountains. One thing you can be sure of, with all this rain and moisture, it should be a long, glorious leaf season this autumn. (unless, of course, the rain continues and pounds the leaves off the trees prematurely)

Henry, thanks so much! Great views, looks like there's been a little sun. Those shots sort of remind me of tropical mountain views in certain parts of the Caribbean, with all the lush greenery.
