We're looking to relocate to the Asheville area. We have an interest in Black Mountain, Swannanoa and Leicester. We are probably going to buy property (minimum 2 acres, with year round mountain views) and build modular ($100k max. on land). Initially, Mars Hill, Weaverville and Marshall were on our list. We want to be 20 minutes from Asheville and felt that Mars Hill and Marshall were too far away. We have concerns about the Super Wal-Mart and mall and eliminated Weaverville. How is Swannanoa and Leicester for retirees? Thank you for any information and any other suggestions on towns, north of Rte 40.

I rather like Black Mountain. But not so much Swannanoa.

You should also have a look-see at the Fairview area, altho there's not exactly a "town" there, rather a hamlet, and it's rural... but it matches what you're looking for pretty good, even tho it's "south of I-40." Also, you would have quicker access to the resort area of Lake Lure, and still be able to get into Asheville for whatever.

Try to find some pictures of Fairview online somewhere, and you'll see what I'm talking about, the views and countryside are so pretty.

metfan, dont get me wrong i love leicester. Ithink it has the best location to asheville of the towns you named. I just thought you wanted more rural. There are Mc Mansions everywhere around here, you just gotta find your spot. If black mt is within range, I would try west of asheville to. You can be in waynesville in 30 minutes so maybe in that direction.

O.K. organick. I should have given a little more info, in my original post. My wife is an art major and wants to get back to sculpting. When we visited the area last October, we felt Black Mt. would be a perfect place for her. So we want to be as close to Black Mt, as possible. Swannanoa seemed like a very good solution (between Asheville and Black Mt) and Leicester was an outside possibilty. We're not looking for very rural but Asheville itself, is not an option. We're very familiar with MacMansions. We have them here in NJ. Hate them and the way some builders just destroy the land, putting them up.

I would not want to live in Leicester. Even though it is in Buncombe county it is not a very desirable area.
