I'm not familiar with the firm but the pay seems reasonable though not stellar for someone just getting into the oil sector, particularly the Minot area. If you're dependable and effective you'll probably get a nice pay hike with same firm or elsewhere. The housing subsidy would take care of 50% or more of your rent as Minot rent has cooled off quite a bit in recent months. The subsidy is probably considered taxable income so keep that in mind when filling out the W4 should you accept the gig.

Eh, I think you can do alot better then $18 honestly. That seem a bit low. You should be mid 20's easily to upper 20's. If there is no hurry to get up here I would keep looking.

Also since you said you were looking at getting a driving gig, here's a forum for oilfield truckers that are working in ND. There's some decent information in there so read around. Oilfield Trucking Forum

If you work outdoors or drive a truck yer better off bugging out after Thanksgiving
and coming back around Easter. Many CDL drivers do that. Nobody with any brains
would want to hang around for winter in North Dakota.

Just an update: been here over a month now. The cold is manageable enough, living in Minot and working out of Parshall. The roustabout company I work for is incredibly disorganized, bit it pays the bills while I look for something else. Going well so far!

Of course it is. My husband is fond of pointing out that working oil in a North Dakota winter is much more pleasant than it was working cattle.
For the most part, you don't have to be in the direct weather, all day long. If people just get some basic cold-weather gear and they'll be fine. And, because so many people DO clear out for winter (Southerners are notorious for not being able to hack it, though it's certainly not a rule), now is a good time to go job hunting.

An update here for you folks, I know how people like them.

Came out here in December, worked for a little fly-by night company near Minot doing insulation on pipes for 17.00/hr, averaging about 70 hours and week and with no housing.

In March the company disbanded, so I quickly found a position down in Dickinson doing much the same thing, adding in treater tanks and building treater houses for 19.00, averaging about 60 hours a week but they housed five of us in an incredible 5 level 5 br/6 bath home for free.

Just this morning I got the call to start with a drilling company, beginning at 28.00 an hour working 2 on 2 off, with bennies to start at 60 days. Man camp while we're on site and I have a living arrangement taken care of on the off weeks anyhoo.

Since coming out here I've managed to find a wonderful girlfriend, pretty great job, and overall am really really happy I made the move out here.
