Without knowing what you're not looking for in your next hometown, it's hard to really way what the cons are. Objectively speaking, as long as you can deal with the weather, Rhinelander is like a lot of similar towns in rural Wisconsin in that they're about as good as it gets for affordable small-town living. To do much better you'd have to pony up the money to live in a resort town. Rhinelander has a Trig's which is a plus in my book, but the one in Eagle River is nicer.

That said, the last time I looked the property taxes in Rhinelander were pretty outrageous compared to other nearby communities. And that's saying something seeing how Wisconsin is not known for its gentle approach to property taxes. I don't know if that's still the case, but it's something to look out for by shopping tax rates against those of nearby communities.

I'm from Phillips which is about 50 minutes away and we go to Rhinelander to shop. We have no big stores in our area. I have to say that for shopping and eating out Rhinelander is not bad at all. They have Menards, Wal-Mart, Shopko, Kohl's and I think I remember seeing a J.C. Penney outlet. I would have to agree that probably the outskirts will be better on taxes, unless you're looking at lakefront which will be high no matter where you go. As far as your sports likes, if that's really important to you, anywhere this far north will be great for that. Rhinelander is a beautiful area with a lot of lakes. The big question is are you coming back with jobs lined up? The employment opportunities up here are very slim right now. I think we're lagging behind the rest of the country when it comes to new jobs opening up. If you go to Job Center of Wisconsin and type in Rhinelander's county you may get an idea of just what kind of employment is open.

We are gettin some snow today with accumulation. Looks like about 1/2" with drizzle coming now. Anything else I could help you with let me know, like I said I'm in Phillips which is not that far from Rhinelander. A job offer to move to is a huge plus to move anywhere right now.

My husband and I and our children live in Rhinelander. It's a nice small community. For it's size, I think it has a lot to offer....YMCA, Kohls, WalMart, Shopko, Trigs, etc. Hunting and fishing is definitely abundant!! Send me a message if you're looking for housing!! We're putting our home on the market.

And if you have any other specific questions, feel free to let me know!!! We've got pretty much all the ins and outs of the area down.

Check out the taxes like Drover said, they can be major compared to actual home value. I moved here from NE Illinois 3 yrs. ago and after some major tax discussions finally got through my head what they were trying to tell me!

I'm not working, didn't need a job, was looking for a nice, small town environment. The tax issue was not a major deal breaker for me and I do realize property tax is high compared to the value of my house. Having no immediate family nearby, my issue was safety, stores to walk to, available services for seniors, transportation and a variety of apartments if I decide to go that route eventually.
