I have recently gotten a job in Oshkosh and I will be moving from the South. Do you have any opinions on safe neighborhoods to live in or areas in particular for a single girl living by herself to stay away from? Also do you have any suggestions of things to do/get involved in to make the transition a bit easier? Any helpful information would be great!

I know Oshkosh a little, but not enough to help you very specifically. I do know that there aren't any really "rough" neighborhoods. Probably the worst areas have the most student housing (it's a college town) and are run down rentals with drunken kids throwing up in the bushes. Doesn't get much worse than that in Oshkosh.

Hi! I grew up in Oshkosh and still have family there. Congratulations on your new job!

Okay, so Oshkosh is pretty safe, overall. But, you'll probably want to avoid any housing on Jefferson St. There are a few blocks with halfway houses filled with sex offenders. I believe that if you go to the sex offender registry, it will show the area I'm talking about. You may also want to avoid housing near the UW-Oshkosh campus. Not because of safety issues, but just because it gets loud and there are parties, etc.
There are a lot of really nice neighborhoods in the surrounding area. If you're looking for small town living, even take a look at Omro. It's an easy drive from Omro to Oshkosh and it's a nice community. So is Winneconne.

I don't know if this is up your alley or not, but every month there is an art walk in Oshkosh. There are lots of galleries and stores that get involved and it's a good way to get to know people.
The Oshkosh Library is lovely, as well. There's Menominee Park, which is pretty year-round.

Be sure to check out the Paine Art Center and Arboretum. It's one of the most beautiful places in Oshkosh, in my opinion.

If you're not vegan or vegetarian, try Leon's on Murdoch... their custard and Joos burgers are awesome. They're kind of an institution in Oshkosh.

Every year, there's a HUGE event... EAA... maybe you're already aware of it. Experimental Aircraft Association. Tons of people come from everywhere in the world to this event. There are some music events, as well... Rock USA and Country USA. These events take place on the south side of town, right off Highway 41.

Gardina's Wine Bar on Main St. is a lovely place to have lunch or pick up wine. AtomicKatz has vintage everything. Frugal Fashions on Main St. is a great place to find really nice clothing and home goods for a bargain price. There are a number of consignment stores on Main St.

You'll see a LOT of Green Bay Packer "everything" here. When the Packers are playing, I do my shopping, etc. It's awesome. If you're into football, find a sports bar... you'll meet tons of people in no time at all.

I just moved back to the Oshkosh area from South Carolina. If you need any help with anything, feel free to give a yell.
