It's the intelligent thing to do, to take UI, rather than just except a menial job. Especially if you're a white collar professional, who is worth much more, than the minimum wage. If you're eligible to receive UI, then don't feel guilty by taking it. After all, you previously paid into the system via taxes, to receive UI. And you got UI because you lost your job, through no fault of your own.

Besides, nobody can live on minimum wage these days, if you're a self-supporting adult. As long as minimum wage is below about $14 an hour, then it's not enough to survive on if you have to support yourself, with no help from others.

If you had a broken leg you wouldn't use a doctor? The fact that you think you live outside of society shows something about that 'intelligence' you were talking about. You never eat food that you didn't grow/raise yourself? And if you did, you didn't grow or raise it on land that you rely on the US government for to keep safe from foreign invaders? That is pretty amazing! You must live on an independent island somewhere outside of any civilized country, growing your own food and weaving your own clothes, and yet somehow you can get online! Do you want me to explain how many people you rely on simply to have a computer sitting in front of you?

OMG that's hysterical. I just can't stop laughing at this one. It's true.

Everytime I get on this forum EVERYONE is attacking eachother-can we stay on topic? First off I don't think I would get hired for menial employment- I've applied to positions paying a lot less than I was making-but I was okay with that-hey I can move up...I've been told I am overqualified..I've never been unemployed and it's scary but I just want a job. The problem I'm running into is I don't have enough experience in certain fields-

I would guarantee that pretty much anyone who has a good head on their shoulders and was able to get a decent paying job can probably make it on their own. I can't see taking an $8/hr job, that is $300/week before taxes. You can make much more than that doing things like pressure washing houses, detailing cars, pouring extended patios, parting out cars on ebay, mowing/trimming lawns, etc. All require just a few hundred $$ in start-up costs. Advertise on Craigslist and a quick web site for <$100/yr. Clean cut, on time, cheap, you will get referrals left and right. Start it while on unemployment so you can build a client base.

Hey everybody, there is still time to vote. I know everybody in here has not voted yet. Let's get the word out. The more votes, the more accurate it will be.

Use it for what it was intended for: Finding suitable employment.

I say that as a white-collar worker who, if I were in that situation, would not find it cost-effective lock myself into 8 hours a day flipping burgers. It would be far, far better to use that time to network and find employment that would actually pay my bills, employment for which I trained and obtained a pricey education.
