Depends.
I never worked in fastfood, but had a friend that worked at Wienerschnitzel during high school.
Always rolled by their when he was getting off work and got a large, free goodie bag!!
McDonalds, I heard they only allow you to take a certain amount of food home rather than "clean out the days leftovers".
I believe it's discounts only. Most chain restaurant's policy is to trash old food (for liability reasons) than to give it away. If you are allowed to take anything for free, then that's usually up to the individual coworkers. If you work at a family restaurant, you're more likely to get free food. My ex bf's family owned a few restaurants in my area so I know.
A one has better chances of surviving working at McDonald's than working at Starbucks
Moderator cut: snip Yes, you get free food at McDonalds. I would also try other fast food places too, if I were you. There is Burger King, White Castle, Steak n' Shake to name a few. I know White Castle in my area pays better than McDonalds.

Reason: Report, please, don't engage.
I got a free small pizza every day when I worked at a family pizza place. I have no idea really but I think most restaurants, even fast food chains, give you a free meal.
I also knew a couple guys who worked at chain coffee places (not Starbucks). They'd go home with a half dozen or so donuts every day.
If I recall, when I worked all of 2 weeks at McDonalds 15 years ago, it was 1/2 priced food and a free beverage while on the clock (meal break). It may depend on the franchise owner as well. Still, shoot higher than fastfood. Retail is a little better.
