Why would they need a reason to hire the other person? If they wanted the other person, they would have made them an offer. Obviously they are interested in the OP or they would have told him/her to take a hike.
I was just throwing stuff out there and guessing. No need to take it seriously
I would never say that to an applicant, and risk getting someone's hopes up, when the other person may end up being selected. Better to say "one of the top candidates." At least they kept you updated. Good luck.
Totally agree. I had a hiring manager tell me that I was one of the 'lead candidates' and they were very interested, probably make me an offer in the next week or so. About two days later I received an auto email stating "Thanks for applying but the position has been filled".
Sorry for not updating. Haven't because I haven't heard back until today. So basically I am 99.9% sure that I have the job. I was emailed today saying an offer hasn't been made to the selected candidate as they are waiting for the salary to be approved by finance. That they cannot tell me anything, but that I will be very happy by the end of this week regarding this and I will be contacted by the head person in HR as well before Friday.
So basically, from the jist of this, they have basically told that I am their candidate for the job, just they have to get all the administrative stuff approved.
OR they are telling you that you and the other guy both want more money than they are willing to pay, so sit tight and get worried over it and be willing to take less when we finally get around to contacting you....
They want that other person but their salary expectations are too high and it looks like they hit an impass in negotiations with that person so they will most liklely have to offer you the position.

I don't get the impression that this is the case. The other candidate was interviewed at 4pm last Friday, and all of this negotiation and stuff happened in one day (yesterday)? They asked for the salary requirements from the beginning. I am not saying the other candidate has been eliminated, I am just saying they I don't think they are telling me this because of a salary fallout with the other one so now I have been selected.
