Haha I agree- on your vacation pack up all your stuff- if they ask what you are doing say you are going to redecorate your space a bit.

Knowing that, you could use gamble. Use your vacation, give a two week notice (that you cannot honor), and if they escort you out then all is well. If not, you can call in next day or two and explain you cannot serve out the two weeks.

As for running into managers and co-workers in the future elsewhere, I would not worry about that. Most people will not hold it against you for looking out for your best interests. After all, they have moved on themselves and no longer have allegiance to that company. As long as you did not make it personal ("I can't work for you clueless morons anymore") or cause them to be dumped w 80 hr/wk to cover your loose ends.

Large employers who escort employees out the door when notice is give pay for the notice period because they don't want departing employees to get angry. If they didn't pay for that period then employees won't give notice in the future and even if they show you the door they may want your assistance in transitioning your responsibilities.

I agree that you should start cleaning out personal stuff (don't remove family pictures and the like - the company will let you take those) and accumulating your personal professional network contact information. Your computer access will be shut down.

Thanks everyone... Today is the first day of my vacation that runs for the next 3 weeks... I did take some items with me and the rest I plan on picking up on a Sunday... the day before I return and give notice.

This facility runs 7 days a week but the office personnel aren't there on weekends.

Got it all planned out. :-)

Congratulations on the new job and 35% raise! What's the secret? Did you have a connection to family or friend in management? Is it about what you know or who you know?

Thanks. It most certainly wasn't about who I knew because I don't know anyone in this area other than the coworkers I've had for the last couple years. As I've said I moved out here alone for work. My family is all on the east coast. I had my resume online and got a call from the owner. We met after work a couple weeks ago and I was offered the job after about a 20 minute interview.

It's an opportunity. In addition to the pay raise I am taking on more responsibility and essentially "running the show" so to speak. Yesterday was the 4th full work day since I accepted the offer. I've been mixing in work days around off days from the other job. I just wanted to be 100% sure it was going to be a good fit before I made the change.

It is a great time of the year to make a job change though because vacation time resets on January 1st... I'm using my 2012 vacation balance as well as 2013 and getting paid through mid-January in vacation from one job while working the other. Time to pad the savings account with 4 weeks of double time + 35% pay.

Will do.

All should be good through mid-Jan when I'm set to return to Job A after using 60 hours vacation to go with 20 hours holiday pay. I'll have 3 weeks in at Job B and will be 100% certain on whether I want to make the switch... the only thing left will be whether or not Job A pays me my remaining 20 hours in vacation.

Whatever happens the next 3 weeks will be nice... getting paid from 2 jobs at the same time while testing the waters at the new job.

Well... It worked out just as I thought it would.

I got holiday pay for 12/31 and 1/1... 20 hrs vacation for 1/2 and 1/3... 40 hrs vacation for the next week leaving me with a balance of 20 hrs.

I gave notice on 12/14 via email. Was let go.

Paycheck hit the bank today... They paid me my vacation from last week as well as my monthly bonus.

They did not pay me for the remaining 20 hrs of vacation because it hasn't been accrued. (Your yearly vacation shows up on Jan 1st and is usable though?)

So basically it was a good thing I took the 60 hrs vacation instead of giving notice on 1/1 because then I'd have lost all 80 hours.

Instead I got paid for 60 of the 80 because I used it and rolled the dice with giving notice. They let me go as expected.

I also got my monthly bonus for waiting till the 14th. All good here.

I knew it would work out for you. Last I checked, giving notice is just a courtesy, not a necessity.
