FedEx, UPS, and DHS need to improve their customer service and quality control. They are known for throwing around fragile packages. I've had DHS and one other company leave an expensive package right on my doorstep even though the sender requested a signature. The last time I had a package delivered from UPS, they attempted to deliver during the same time period 3 days in a row even though the first slip they left said they would attempt to deliver during a different time slot. I ended up driving several miles to pick it up at their distribution center. Luckily, I didn't live on the other side of town or I would have had to drive upwards of 35 min. to get there. At least when my USPS package gets sent back to the post office, it's just a few minutes away due to multiple locations being placed across town.
Agreed. It would be nice if FedEx and UPS served all addresses. I'm sure this can be accommodated.

I know a rural US mail carrier that does his route in a boat. I don't think will ever see brown boats out there delivering mail.
Which is why we'll always have a Post Office. I certainly hope those of you advocating for the dissolution of USPS realize that it's Constitutionally mandated.

Not quite true. Congress is empowered by the postal clause. Congress is not mandated by it.
Here's the problem. The Post Office was created for two purposes:
1. Facilitate interstate communication.
2. Generate revenue for the government.
It's failing. The Post Office could learn a thing or two from FedEx/UPS. There's no reason for prices to be at a point where they are losing money. A stamp should me several multiples of what it is.
I'm going to predict the future if we get rid of the post office:
Tea Party & GOP a few months after: "There's so many out of work people! They're straining the unemployment system. What oh what is the problem with these lazy SOB's that don't want to work for a living? Government doesn't create jobs! But why are the unemployment numbers in the mid teens?! Government doesn't create jobs!"
Because you idiots, instead of reorganizing the post office with fresh new ideas to make it profitable, just slashed and burned the thing.
This world will be even worse if the post office goes away. IN many ways we can't even imagine.
The fact is USPS employment has been going down for years. Practically unique, it does not rely on layoffs. Post offices have been closing as well. To those who say our nations major problem is lack of jobs, I don't deny it. But propping up unneeded post offices is not the way to grow jobs.
