Actually how do people go to school and work at the same time, unless it is a fast food gig.
Its not that hard. I worked about 20 hours a week and went to school full time. Worked at least 10 hours on the weekend and a couple days a week after school.
There were a few months at two different times I had school or work literally everyday for 3-4 months. That's when it was tough.

We are talking about people who work full-time and go to school at night
You have to work in order to pay for expenses such as tuition, books, gas, etc. Scholarships and FASFA aid is becoming increasingly difficult to come by so working is your only alternative (unless you have parents paying for your expenses).
It also helps get you a real job. Someone with a 4.0 GPA but with no work experience is going to have difficulty landing a job or an internship versus someone with a 3.5 GPA but who has worked consistently and financed his/her college expenses through continuous employment.
And +1 for how you feel at 7am. I find that a lot seem to think it's exactly the same as working days but they don't realize how hard it is to get sleep when all the daytime activity is going on outside. God forbid you live on a busy street and work night shift.
You hit that right on the head. Working over night is really not too bad. Sleeping during the day is the hardest part of a night job.
I have done it, and am beginning to do it again. As long as your job is really only 40ish hours, carrying half time credits, meaning 2 courses a semester, isn't bad. You do an hour of homework a night instead of a TV show, and spend 2 hours or so per course on the weekend. Takes up the same amount of time as a hobby.
I have two kids, too. People don't need tons of alone time, or bar time, or sitting on their ass time - at least not for the few years it takes to do what you need to do.

It takes a special person to do a night schedule of any kind. I for one am a night person but that doesn't mean it'd be a piece of cake to stay awake in class all day after working all night or vise versa.

Many factory workers have night shifts, as do nurses and others in the medical profession. If there were a need for more to work during the night, it would be accomplished.
So far as school and work starting at the same time.... it would be foolish if work were scheduled to begin at 8am, but, school didn't start until 10am. There is purpose to why they begin at similar times.
It varies. I had a shift that was 3 days. 7 am to 7pm fri-sat. 36 hrs but paid for 40. That left plenty of time for school. Also, if you have class like 7-1, there are a lot of places that off something like 3-12. It sucks, but since when did life not suck?
