I doubt that. Such a statement infers that people always had government-provided 'safety-net.' Social security and other entitlement programs weren't enacted until the mid-1930s. And the Federal legislation which enacted it would have been deemed unconstitutional if Roosevelt and his Democrat controlled Congress hadn't threatened to 'stack' the SCOTUS.
Before that time, safety nets were provided by benevolent organizations and charities, as well as through strong familial structures.
By no means did I mean to imply that government safety nets existed a long time ago.
What I meant was that government safety nets are actually prevent us the underclass from going French Revolution on society.
As long as people are not starving, they are not likely to revolt.

The only thing I can think of if I say go on welfare it would not make my hypothetical wife and kids in a bad way but now my parents and sibling, perhaps it could ruin relationships.

What company is this? I would love to know as I would never do business with them. I can't believe that a corporate legal and HR would ever approve this. Such activity could open up a company to all kinds of liabilities. Sexual harassment would be the biggest concern. The fact that a creepy boss could staring at employees all days seems to cross a line that companies work hard to avoid.
I hate my current job. It started out great. Flexible hours, above average hourly plus commissions and I work from home.
Our managers are just people who have been around a long time. A lot of them have no managerial skills at ALL; nor do they have the people skills required to be effective.
Over time though they've start micromanaging us to death. You'll be on a call and in the middle of it a manager will pop you up in instant message asking you 50 questions about why you didn't say this or that, all while you're on the phone with the customer. Then they'll say "lets have a quick conference" so they take you off the phone to go in a conference call room where they berate you, but in an upbeat manner, then send you back on the phones.
We also have to share our computer screens at all times and be on webcam so they can watch us and see what we're doing. I've gotten in trouble before because on my break I've forgotten I was being watched, went and checked my email, then when I log back in to work they say "Why is your email account open? Why are you on facebook" and saying "sorry i was looking at it while on lunch and just forgot to close it" doesn't work.
Plus the push for sales is horrid. It doesn't matter if the customer says "my house burnt down and all my family members died except me" you STILL are expected to try to sell her something.
If it wasn't for the fact that I have young children I'd quit in a heartbeat but the ability to work from home makes me endure all the crap.

The "escort out the door" always makes me laugh. These companies trust you with private information, etc., but the moment they let you go, you become criminal-like and cannot be trusted.
Depends on the position, some employees are spiteful when terminated. At one company that fired there system administrator, he sabotaged there backup tapes and planted a virus that caused the system to crash. Since the company relied heavily on computer programs to used programmable machines to fabricate products, they never fully recovered from the millions in losses. The system administrator was convicted and sent to prison, but the company will never regain the millions of dollars they lost.
At another company a former system administrator logged in with his old passwords that still worked and deleted the Microsoft Exchange database.
At UBS a system administrator quit because he was unhappy with the bonus he was given, planted malicious code that caused 2,000 computers to crash, he also took out stock options, betting that the damage he did would cause the stock price to go down and he could make a fortune.
There are certainly good reasons sometimes to make sure a laid off/fired employee leaves company property quickly as possible. But I think it over used and not required in every case.
A very large insurance company for the military and their families! Not hard to figure out. Horrible micromanagement and upper management/executive positions are created out of nowhere for buddies of the "good ol boy" system. The majority of IT and underwriting positions have been sent to India. They use non-guaranteed bonus to pay you a lower salary, saying your bonus will makeup for the difference. UGH!

Are you serious? I am an USXX member for 20 plus years. Wow they get the highest remarks from customers. Every time I call, maybe it's you, people are really nice.
I may just complain on your behalf that is absolute BS and I am shocked.
