When I say 24/7 I'm talking about jobs you have to constantly think about even when you're not physically at work. Checking emails, planning, studying, etc.

It seems the only jobs paying 50k or above where you work a standard 40 hour week and forget about work when you leave require absurd levels of education, talent, luck or connections to get.

Am I right or wrong?

Wrong.

There's quite a few, but it's going to vary quite a bit by geography.

Many sales jobs
Truck driving
Oil/Nat gas field work

There are a lot. I have one. I leave work at 5 and I don't think about it again until I walk in the door the next morning.

What do you consider to be "absurd levels of education or talent?" Do uneducated shlubs expect the big buck?

By the way, many jobs don't require people to stay constantly plugged in. Some people just get hooked on the devices and they fear they'll miss something. Most times, they can't take action on anything that arrives after 5 pm.

pretty much any and all govt jobs.

since the govt budget is up in the air many private world jobs are this way.

most of the old timers that are running companies think they need to spend 70 hrs a week working, well thats fine, but they also get paid way more. at 50k per year you should take on a job where you dont have to work past 8 a day, its just not worth it in the long run.

everyone is paid by the hour, once you get past 40 per week your hourly rate goes down, this is how the companies take advantage of salaried employees.

work smarter, not longer or harder.

Wrong. Even as an exempt manager I work 7-3 and rarely have to answer calls or check emails after hours. Same with all of my staff, all making more than 60k.

Legal assistant, but it can make your head explode from boredom. I'd much rather have after hours responsibility and be engaged.

They are out there, but they usually require certain skills or some form of intelligence coupled with trainability. I've turned down quite a few manufacturing jobs in this area that paid 50K or more, but those are far from entry level. An entry level assembly line or widget packaging job would pay $8/hr and possibly no benefits.

What is your background/education? Maybe you're field is facing a glut, or opportunities are hit or miss? Companies are actively trying to squeeze workers for all they are worth in many occupations. New reality.

i think youre describing 'sense of responsibility' or 'diligence' plain and simple. a lot of times great ideas are formed away from the desk. most smoker IT guys would tell you.
anyway thinking about how to make things 'better' or finding solutions during your personal time is one reason people get paid 100k+

The jobs (outside of Government) that everyone is talking about probably mostly skilled trades right?

The main reason I asked this question is because it seems like me and ALL my friends work more than a standard 40 hour week. I don't usually have to think about work much after I leave.. but workload is getting so much lately that I have to take work home just to meet deadlines.

It seems most of my friends are in the same position. Sometimes it will be a weekend and we're out at a restaurant and I catch them taking work calls and sending work emails. Its like they can't leave work at work.

Maybe its just their own ambition and not something the job requires, but I just find it odd that no one I know works only 40 hours.

Also my friends are in a variety of occupations: Management, Sales, IT, Teaching, Medical, etc. I'm in procurement, but trying to get out soon. Tired of sitting at a desk all day and seeing the same four walls.

Huh? Nope. Office work (finance). I'm an efficient worker. I get everything done in 8 hours.
