Default Limiting nbr of hours worked per week, to preclude eligibility for benefits

This happens regularly in some companies at some work sites. 30 hours per week is the cutoff. Almost no one is allowed to work more than that.

I remember when Albertsons grocery stores announced they were moving to just part time employees to avoid paying benefits. It wasn't done on the down low, like the way Wal-mart and fast food places do it. It was a press release.

Those "benefits" are an indirect tax on businesses. The public would be griping out of their ears if Congress had done anything ethically or morally right in the past when it enforced the FICA/FUTA crap. Instead, it buried the costs on businesses so the public didn't really have to see the effects. Fast forward to today, and outsourcing, and failing health care, and we see at least part of the problem.

Businesses really struggle to pay those taxes.

business does not pay taxes. it may not be able to compete with outside companys because of the total cost to operate. no corperation pays taxes. get a clue who does. every time you people think somebody owes you something congress has past a tax that is then past on to the end consumer. this is life 101 folks.

Businesses definitely pay taxes. The difference is that businesses (especially the big, wealthy ones) can afford tax lawyers and armies of accountants to make sure they pay the least amount of taxes legally possible.

If you had access to that kind of expertise, you would do the same!
