1688? You're lucky it isn't 16,000. Typically you would have to pay the months that were covered in your contract.

I've only heard of military getting out of a lease break fee.

What do you mean when you say (He Owns)?

If your employer is paying for moving expenses, then part of those expenses would be the expense of breaking the lease, cleaning the old apartment, etc. I'm sure that's true.

I use to be CIVIL FED, yes they will pay it. If you can't get the moving funds before you have to move, then you get reimbursed, so you need to pay it first and turn in the receipts.

The paperwork might take forever, because it's CONUS and you are CIV., so you are last priority.

no- no relocation expenses. that's Ok, what I meant- my boss owns his place- he doesn't rent- so thinking he doesnt know the rules for renters. FL statues only read "service-members" get a free pass on the rental thing. He told me show them the gov't is tansferring you out.? I am asking if anyone ever had any luck wth that. I think not but never hurts to ask.

CPAC most likely took those privileges away during the furloughs last year. Military, in particular, OCONUS active duty gets the full package and priority. You can ask, but don't count on it.

The Servicemember Civil Relief Act (SCRA) address this for military personnel as well as certain civilian employees engaged in specific duties. It is not a universal "get out of jail free" card for all federal employees on every move. (this may be what your employer is confusing with your situation)

Each state enacts their own Landlord Tenant laws (most are posted as a sticky post in the Rental forum of City-Data) that may address relocations. They may provide some, limited or no relief. They may impose requirements that are not too hard all the way to near impossible for the average employee. Additionally, your very own lease may have provisions the landlord allows.

You need to read your lease and your specific state law to see what, if any, relief is available.

You should probably not be too upset. $1,688 is almost certainly on the low end for breaking a lease.

If you can a government letter saying that you are moving at the government's request then you may get a break from your landlord. Similar to government contractors getting a travel orders letter when traveling so they could get the government rate at hotels. At the time I was doing such traveling most hotels honored the letter but some didn't. If you can such a letter and a sympathetic landlord you may be able to avoid the fee.
