Get into something that involves commodities, particularly energy or metals. If you are going to be a welder, you want to be a welder in a mine or an oil field. If you are smart enough, avoid the labor part and get into the trading side of things.

Become a motorcycle mechanic. Takes about a year. Make sure the school has a good placement rate.

Navy Seabees are good. Nice way to get OJT and experience.

You need to take an aptitude test. You can take the ASVAB just to see where your strengths are, see what you qualify for. Not saying to go sign up. Just take the test.

Structural is a great trade that will serve you well. HVAC, PLUMBING, ELECTRICAL, HEAVY EQUIPMENT you can take all those as far as you want to go!

Make sure you are cut out for a trade. I did 10 years as an electrician and it was hard work. Very good money, but it did take a toll on my body.

Eventually left the trade and became an engineer

HVAC would be my first choice. CAN'T POSSIBLY BE OUTSOURCED. Will always be in high demand. I know several techs that got certified worked a couple years for a established company then started their own business and are doing great. I know one guy that does no advertising and is so busy he has a 5 day waiting list.

In my opinion, law enforcement is one of the best job opportunities, period, for the average person; let alone without a college degree. Become a cop. If you want safety, do it in the suburbs; if you want action and varied experience do it in one of the top 10-20 or so largest cities. If you're young enough to have an aversion to cops and therefore the law enforcement profession, get over it and thank yourself later. Around my area, cops start relatively low at around $45k but the pay bumps come quickly and max out around $90k after 5 years. You get the best healthcare, a rare pension, and your own credit union that caters to officers (meaning: much easier loan approval for anything). If you're still to young for the local police force, waiting out your time in the military is a good yet very committed option. Be sure it's what you want to do. I recommend the air force if that's the road you want to go down.
