I got laid off last year and was unemployed for 4 1/2 months. I finally landed a job paying 40% less than I was making with no benefits with a staffing company. This lead to a full time opportunity with better pay and better benefits then I was making last year. So another opening came up recently at the company I'm working for, I contacted a former co-worker that has been out of work for 6 months to see if he was interested. It does pay around 40% less than he was making before, but full benefits, 401k, 3 weeks vacation, stock options, yearly bonus not to mention it's a big company, getting in, future opportunities would be vast.

His response, he wasn't interested, too much of a pay cut and not the type of work he wants to do any more. He's taking the summer off.

HUH?! I would think after 6 months anyone would be more than eager to jump at a solid job lead with a good company, even if it's for less money. Guess he's going to have his Wife support him for the next couple years. Does anyone else think he's a fool for not considering this job?

No, I do not call anyone a fool that takes control of their lives and knows exactly what they want to do, respect.

Not a fool at all, he is doing what he wants to do, even better if he has the financial means to.

I took two years off after my Navy career ended, I had no interest in working, went on a two year, around the world vacation instead.

I have no idea where this whole "live to work" mentality comes from.

After college, I was not interested in working for a while either, I was actually overseas on vacation when I got hired, though I was looking, I was not looking at taking any job like retail or something, only career, good pay and benefits type.

Been there, didn't give up on my profession. It really depends on how much is in the bank. Once you deviate from your chosen path - no matter if it is what you have been doing or what you want to do - it is hard to get back.

He's not poor, but not rich either, he's in his early 50's, no where near in a position to retire just yet. Yes he can probably afford to take a year off, but the longer your out of work in this economy, the harder it is to get a good job at decent company. And believe me jobs at good companies are few and far between. All too often you get stuck working for a staffing company for crappy pay and crappy benefits.

I've been there, when you first start looking for work, you say I'm not going to settle for anything less than X salary with X benefits. But after months of few job leads and fewer interviews, reality of just how bad things really are hit you and you begin to lower your expectations. It becomes less what you want and more of how much you need to get by.

I guess he knows his financial situation better than anyone else so no, he is no fool. I'm sure if he really really needed the job he would have taken it on first offer.
