Do you experience age discrimination when you interview for jobs? I know in the Philippines there's a lot of age discrimination, but how's the USA for Mech Engr's. Mech Designers, and Drafters?

When I was 40 and I interviewed at one company in Houston the engineers interviewing me were youger than me, and they freaked out.

There was a 60 minutes program several years ago about the long term unemployed and they said many were 40+ years old.

More so in private industry, you won't see that in civil service. I got my job at age 57, have since hired people 48 and 54. We have recently hired some engineers and they have been in their 40s except for 1. With the experience
we require, there is going to be some age. Our average employee is 49 now which is becoming a bit of a concern. Try cities, counties, states, airports, and utility districts.

In my field we're all old so thank God age discrimination doesn't happen to me!

Here's two examples of specifications for all federal projects around the country.

FAA control tower in New York

US Army Hospital in Georgia

I know a lot of them but I am thinking there might be as many as 8 to 12 professional engineers that have passed the fire protection engineering exam but they don't really want to do this sort of work so they'll pawn it off on someone holding NICET.

I'm 66, still employed full time and not considered "to old" as of yet.

I did some checking on the registry.

There are 54 Level IV certificate holders in the state of Georgia.

The average age of a Level IV certificate holder in Georgia is 61 so I am not really that much over the hill at 66. 25% of NICET IV certificate holders are age and older with 13% of our number is over 70. Only 25% of NICET IV certificate holders are younger than 50 with most of them in the upper 40's. There is only one Level IV certificate holder in Georgia under 40 and he's 39 due to be 40 in a couple months. If I did have to compete at least there's nobody under 40.

The industry is getting very nervous because they see the coming tsunami of retirements staring them in the face and they don't know what to do. It's so bad I know one guy in his early 80's, and another who is 76, still working full time.

Seriously, how does one interview someone in their 80's that has been doing this for over 60 years?

Tell me, what was it like before sprinkler systems? Did they really let people burn to death?

Do I need to conduct a seance to reach your first supervisor?

We've been around since the 1800's.

Unfortunately yes.

IMHO, some of the Millenial engineers have no manners. I know that we have a couple of engineers that I wouldn't trust to take my kids out to lunch, much less interview people.

There's more discrimination for lying on a resume, employment gaps, no answers to "what have you done for the last xx years", felonies, and a general sense of entitlement, Jesse.

In software and computer "engineering," probably more so than in traditional engineering fields like civil, chemical, and mechanical.

I am an old computer guy. More than youth I wish I had the ability to bs. I have seen people make lots of money in shops just because they know how to convince people that they know what they are doing. In the computer industry to know what you are doing is silver. To convince people that you know what you are doing is gold!
