I tried another job ad today. The company name listed is a sizable company. The ad asked that all information for applying be emailed. But I researched and called instead. When I called no one had a clue what I was talking about!

This leads me to wonder if people post job ads with respectable company names but your information ends up somewhere else?

Usually the person answering the phone has no idea about job openings.

Yes. And also, they might be using a staffing agency to hire new employees. They do pre-screening, background checks & then send you to the employer.

Yep. Which is why you should follow the directions in the ad and apply the way they request.

Seems odd that HR wouldn't know.

But couldn't that suggestion cause people to send information to scammers? If the information gets delivered to somewhere other than the listed company, via url scam or something, it may turn out not to be a legitimate recruiting service.

I don't think our information ends up somewhere else, but it's more a case of few people knowing what's going on when a department is hiring.

Did you check Linkedin to see if the job is posted there? Jobs posted there often include the name / contact info of the person who posted it.

This is not odd at all. If it is a sizable company not everyone in HR (maybe only 1-2) will know about a particular posting.

Just follow the directions.

I don't send information unless I first uncover where it's going and who will see it!

Why would I do that? I can research the company itself.
