Been out of work for almost a year. Was earning six figures but can't seem to find a job. I'm getting desperate. I applied to Starbucks for a management position but I'm 51 and I see it's mostly a young crowd there. Am I too old?

Why would you be too old? Honestly, 51 isn't that old... even if the Starbucks crowd seems young. You might be perfect for the role! Good luck!

Forget the name of the book, but I just read it a few months ago. Guy in his 60's that was making 6 figures as an ad executive, then lost it all. Went out and got a job at Starbucks and claims that he is the happiest he has ever been.

You shouldn't have waited that long to get another job.

Over the hill.

American corporations hate older farts like us. As well as some of the younger folk.

Nope. You have an edge above others with your experience. Check out some posts on this forum where people are applying for internships in 40s-50s. I had classmates in my Master's courses who were much older & they did so well in class. They had taken a break from their job to go back to school & they did much better than the rest because they brought real world experience. Reminds me of Alec Baldwin in 30Rock, a senior executive at nbc who has to start back in the mail room because of some conflicts & within a day he works his way back up to his old position (S3 Ep1). Work with same passion & interest as your last job & see how you progress within any organization. Starbucks, McDonalds, Walmart, Subway, etc. are huge corporations that have plenty of opportunities, just like any other company. They might not pay as much as entry level jobs at other companies but they have growth opportunities for their employees. Be proud of yourself & your experience. Atleast you are not sitting at home whining & using welfare. There are going to be many people in this position because technology is changing so fast & some products are becoming obsolete. Changing tracks & learning a new trade are going to become more common for all age groups.

??

Here https://www.city-data.com/forum/unemp...-screw-up.html

you say " I make about 60K per year."

A Starbucks manager makes about the same.... and I would think age is irrelevant.

Depends on your personality. If you can interact with younger people and not have an age concern or issue then the answer is no, you are not too old. If you have doubts about working around younger people then the answer is yes, you are too old to work for SBs.

The local Starbucks near me as a number of middle aged people working there. A lot of these types of jobs are turning to hire older people because they tend on average to be more reliable workers.
