I got laid off from my IT job a couple of months ago. I'm not having much luck finding a new one so far. I think part of my problem is that I'm just burned out. I've been working non-stop for almost 30 years, and I feel like I just can't do it anymore. I don't feel motivated to go out and hunt down opportunities like I used to. I'm also competing for jobs with people that are much younger than I am, and have the latest and greatest acronyms on their resumes.

I guess I don't have a question. I'm just venting.

Well, maybe I do have a question... what should I do to get myself motivated again?

Go hike the Appalachian Trail. If you got $6,000 to blow and time off now is the time.

Do you mean to say that you have to pay $6000 to hike the Appalachian?

Well I hiked last year it cost about that much to hike it comfortably. Seems to be standard cost these days. Shoes, gear, food, and hostels twice a week. It adds up. 5-6 months of living that really isn't that expensive. $30-$60 at a grocery store ever couple of days and $20 on a good meal in town. I lived better than I ever have and was basically homeless.

Thanks for the replies. I think taking a class and a trip are good ideas. I don't know about hiking the Appalachian Trail and staying in hostels... I am 50+ remember! Maybe a road trip somewhere?

I see a couple of 50 something folks in IT still cranking. I think IT today doesn't fit older people even management. I have not met any 50+ folk that gets today's technology and trends. It's not that hard but it's not simple either.

OP - do you need to get a job right away? If you have some financial reserves, take a couple of months off and do whatever you want. It's good to let the mind freewheel once in a while.
