Just read this article...interesting...the one i find more interesting was that employers rely too much on the interview vs asking the references.

LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman on the biggest lie employers tell employees - Vox

"One is where the employer is actually deluding themselves." Employers may want to believe their workplace really is like a family, and, in that moment, they may convince themselves it actually is like a family. The other version of the lie comes because the employer wants the employee to believe it. "They really want the employee to be loyal to the company," Hoffman continues. "That's when it gets deceptive."

Yeah, you gotta know that they do this stuff. You have to jump through hoops and tell lies to get to the office and they tell lies to make you want to be there more than anywhere else.

Some (maybe many) companies require that reference checking be done with HR or some other designated person only. They will often give very limited information to avoid any defamation claims. I know at one company I worked for, HR said they would only tell the prospective employer how the person left the company. Some might also say whether or not the person is eligible for rehire, but won't give the reasons why if ineligible.

There are some mean bosses that enjoy bashing employees behind the scenes because they can. They get a power trip out of giving people bad references. As far as good references go, many of them are from people who personally liked the employee. They enjoyed socializing, even if the employee was crappy, so they give a good reference. That's not counting the people who use family members and friends to pose as former supervisors. I just find the reference system to be a farce.
