I used to make close to that and still do just a hair more. My mortgage is $1580/month then Utilities in the Winter is $200+ and then Water is maybe $75 a month. Sometimes it was close to make ends meet.

Default how sad

[quote=captnemo;2625023]can you accept and live decently on a salary of $50,000 ,5ks vac 15 sk days, low cost med, 12 holidays, st/lt disability, 12 mile drive or is this a insult to you(a poverty level salary) if the following conditions exist.

maybe it's just a misuse of vocabulary but POVERTY? come on! 5 weeks vacation and 12 holidays, 15 sick days, and only 12 miles away,

If this is your idea of poverty open your eyes because I would guess this is a better job than at least 60% of the country. What was your last job? MLB closing pitcher or nfl field goal kicker?

please tell them I will take the job for 49k

Try about 80-90% of the country, not 60%.

1)you were a single person
2)you are married and spouse is also working,
3)in your 50s, unemployed, no offers more than 55,000 but getting interviews and not sure when next offer will come.
4)You are just disgusted and tired of looking.

It's over twice what I make now. And I support two people on my income alone.

Your federal tax rate, and many state rates go down when you make less money. Even a single person with no dependents making 5000 a month takes $3461.93 a month home after federal and state taxes in New York, so depending on the local income taxes and 401k or health insurance withholding a persons take home should be much higher then your figure.

As for the original poster, you really need a clue, having a two income family with each making $50k a year is considered upper middle class income for most people. I know several people who came to Colorado from New York City that would have loved to have that kind of income in NYC and in fact would still be there if they could have found a job that paid it. If you cannot afford to live on that maybe you should move out of manhatten and look at the rest of the world. There are people all over this country that are moving 1000s of miles just to get a job that pays anywhere close to that type of income. The fact of the matter is that even in New York and California the average household income is just over $50k a year, hell the median household income for the country is $50,233 which you would be making on your own.

Sounds like OP was talking about a federal job! And that being the case he would get a step increase automatically every anniversary regardless of performance. So in about 5 yrs he would be well into the 60,000 pay range. But most federal jobs don't start out at 5 wks vacay so I could be wrong. You get 5 wks after about 15 yrs. But regardless, the benefits can mean more than the pay in most cases.
I have a friend out of work due to neck/spinal surgery of some type. His job has NO sick day pay at all, and he can only use his one week vacay during his anniversary time which is June. He is applying for state disability or maybe something thru his wife's job that covers him too.

That's livin large here in Arkansas, I know people with masters degrees that don't make that much.
Unlike some parts of the country you can actually own a home though. For what it takes to buy a decent house in some places you could literally buy a mansion and have enough money left over to mantain it.
