Hi All-

I know this has been asked many times, and usually I would NEVER leave my perm role for a contract but this situation is a little different. Basically..

Current role: Perm position, small to mid-sized company, pay is good, unlimited vacation, high job security, benefits lacking (no 401k), but health insurance is decent (out of pocket $100/month). Even though the position itself is good, I have been feeling kind of burned out, bored. Been wanting a change, a new challenge and have been job hunting the past month.

Now, I have been offered a 12-month contract to work for Google. Obviously with a contract role, there is no PTO or benefits although the agency does offer their own health benefits for their contract employees. The plan coverage is minimal (out of pocket ~$200/month). The pay would be about ~30% increase than what I am currently making.

Would you make the jump? To have a brand name on your resume and since it's a 12 month contract, it's a good amount of time to have it on your resume and start searching for other opportunities around the 9-month mark. I figured if I had Google on, it'll be much MUCH easier to find positions elsewhere afterwards.

If the only reason is to have "Google on" then I'd say no. If you try to get back into perm position like you're in you might actually be looked at with suspicion as potentially "spoiled". Once you go Google, etc.

But if you are looking for new experience and have no dependents then why not? When you have mortgage and kids such decisions will be 100x more difficult.

Stay.

Boredom is not a good enough reason to launch yourself into the uncertain world of contract work.

Go.

Being young, single, with no dependents gives you the freedom to move with little consequence. Google will look good on your resume.

Go for it.

If you are not willing to take a risk for a better job when you're young and single, when would you?

Go for it.

Never stay with a job that you are bored with when you are single and can make stuff happen.
You aren't stuck.

Exactly. Life is too short not to take chances.
