Many a times I have referred my friends for an opening at my work place. But recently since last few months, I have been contacted by many unknown people (some of them were students about to graduate this summer) on LinkedIn asking me to refer them at my workplace. I do feel like helping someone to find a job, but am not sure about referring an unknown person.

Would you refer an unknown person at work? Am not sure if I refer them and then company holds me liable if at all something happens with that candidate in future. Not sure how referral process works in the back.

I don't understand why a stranger would contact you and ask them to refer them for a job. Nor do I understand why you would do it. Your reputation and judgement are also being evaluated in this process. If we worked for the same company and you referred someone to me, I would pick up the phone and ask you all kinds of questions you couldn't answer about this person you just recommended. You would hang up the phone feeling pretty foolish.

No. If something happens with them it will be "on you".

I would never do that. Why would you even consider this?

While you most likely won't be held responsible for a bad recommendation, it will tarnish your reputation. People simply won't trust your judgment and thus will harm your career.

Sounds one of your 'friends' has name dropped you into being a good person for recommending?

You are being used by lazy people. Don't waste your time.

If the bolder portion is your motivation, and your referral influences the hiring decision, do you feel guilty about the people who did not get the job because you recommended some random stranger?

No effing way. I'd refer them to the web page, let them apply like anyone else.
