Since he said He said "to keep in touch in case things don't work out" I would expect your "window" to be open until your replacement has been hired. On the other hand, he may have just been trying to be polite and really wouldn't hire you back after you demonstrated your lack of loyalty. Here, any such window would be limited to the day the job announcement is made public. After that you would have to apply just like the others, and we might decide to go with someone new. No one is irreplaceable, as was recently demonstrated by the promotions of two of my people to other departments. We have managed for several weeks while interviewing, with one new person starting the week after next, more interviews coming up Friday. Fortunately it hasn't been all that busy and two of my people are happy to work some overtime and make extra money.
