Let me start off by saying, many people have it worse.

I have been at my warehouse job for almost 7 years (june will be 7)...I am about to go from having 2 weeks of vacation (which i got after three years....after year one and two i only had a week) to having 3 weeks of vacation but I am miserable. People, including my dad, have been suggesting that I consider just staying (even though those people know I have been miserable for years and previously they suggested I leave) unless I get offered more money, which is gonna be hard to come by with my lack of skills. I currently make $17/hr which is the maximum that an employee in my position can make. I can't get any more raises. However, I am tired of not making more money and having to deal with the "jail house" bully mentality of working at a warehouse.

I interviewed for a customer service position that pays the same as what I make now, but has better hours (it's a 1st shift job, weekends off, right now I work 4pm-1230am and get almost every weekend off), but the job has high turnover and most people don't last more than a few months. It's a customer service position at a manufacturing facility. I am not sure that they will even hire me because when I was asked my weaknesses, I told them that I don't quite work at the same pace as other people and the manager who interviewed me said that that will be a problem....so I'm guessing they aren't going to call and offer me that job.

I know I have posted on here before about not being able to get a job with my marketing degree. I don't think I want to do marketing anymore anyway. I have been out of school 10+ years and forgotten almost everything I learned anyway, so who would hire me anyway.

Every time I bring up wanting to leave the warehouse job and getting something better or with more potential, my dad and others always say, "well since you have been at the warehouse so long you have seniority so you might want to just consider staying". Seniority at a warehouse? what the f does that even get you anyway? It's not like they consult me before making important decisions.

I just want more out of life and more pay. I don't know what to do with my life, though. I know I will get roasted in here for posting this but I needed to vent.

You have ultimate control of your career so if you don't like your current job, take steps to acquire new skills and switch to a different one. Just re-read your past threads.

No reason to get roasted at all. You have a long term job which is great, and are simply looking for a different environment. Unfortunately, Its unlikely you will get called back for this job due to the managers response to the weakness question. Use something different next time that has less of an impact relevant to the jobs dities. Follow up with how you sought to improve on it.

You certainly do not have to stay just because you are there a while. What type of environment and responsibility do you visualize being happy in daily? Customer service goes across many industries. You have everything from transportation to entertainment to hospitality. And you already have those skills that could qualify you. If you don't want that, what else could you see yourself doing for work?

I hope you find something new and really great.

You have a job from 4:00 PM to 12:30 AM. You want more money and you have no idea what you want to do to make a living. Instead of going to school and increasing your debt; why not try a second job? Go to a temporary employer, like Manpower, and see if you could get a job that would not conflict with your primary job. It could maybe be only four hours a day; just so you have time to cleanup and get to your 'regular' job on time. With temporary jobs you could try one and if you did not like it; try another one. At the same time you would have more spending money. I know that it is not easy; I have worked two eight hour warehouse jobs and had my own business on weekends when I was your age. I did not do it forever; just long enough to chose my true path. During that time I got pretty much out of debt and have enjoyed that status for many years. I went from warehouse, to yard jockey, to trucking - always looking for more money and better benefits.

One thing you did not mention were your current benefits or whether you still need years to have them 'vested'. Whenever you look for other jobs; always compare the whole package and not just the dollars in you paycheck. As you get older health insurance can cost you big bucks or the lack of it. Also; never tell those you work with what you are doing or the fact you are looking; it's none of their business and somebody will hold it against you. Besides you do not want the embarrassment if you would fail at any position.

Good luck!

OP, you have seven years of warehouse experience. Your next move could be a warehouse manager at a company that offers opportunities for advancement outside the warehouse for two jobs from now.

Only you are the master of your future.

You can decide to be miserable or move on.

Your choice?

As someone who has worked in office/cubicle environments for the past decade, I can confirm that almost all of the people I've worked with have been very unhappy at their jobs. Also, be aware that many offices are full of bullies. I've dealt with plenty.

If I were you, I'd try to find a job that doesn't take place in a group setting, something where you are working alone and off site for the most part.

Invest $10 in the Self-Directed Search. This isn't a skills-based test, it's based on your work preferences - the kind of environment you like, the sort of things you like to do (and the sort of things you don't like to do).

SDS | Self Directed Search | Online Career Guidance Test

You can see a sample report here:

http://www.self-directed-search.com/...port%20RIE.pdf

It doesn't give a single answer, but it points to various careers that might be a good fit for you, and provides a lot of information.

The second piece is O*Net; this is a free resource offered by the U.S. Department of Labor/Employment and Training Administration. You can search for a career by name using the search field on the upper right of this page:

https://www.onetonline.org

There are also links for browsing careers by various criteria lower down on the page. If you went to a career counselor or coach, chances are good both O*Net and the SDS would be involved. It will tell you job prospects, skills required, education required, average salaries, all sorts of information that's helpful in deciding on a career. Here for example is the O*Net page for Construction Carpenters:

https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/47-2031.01

Bottom line: no one - including a career counselor - is going to tell you what you need to do as a career. You're going to have to decide what's important to you, and do the groundwork to help you make a decision and get whatever training you need to make a career change.
