"Not a good fit" means you got under someone's skin. Not necessarily the line manager, but someone with power at the office.

BTW, power doesn't equate with seniority. At many firms, long-serving receptionists/ secretaries/ admins have enormous power because they know where all the bodies are buried.

Always be sweetness and light with all the admins. With the rest of the staff keep your head down and get your work done on time.

Not a good fit = someone particularly the boss doesn't like you. In our shallow, self-absorbed world people don't need to interact professionally with people they otherwise wouldn't hang out with or grab a beer with after work. Work is all about being fun to hang out with and not adding value to a company.

I've seen that a few times. My father was a teacher and a new principal decided she only wanted teachers she could hang out with and have beers with and decided to target all of the older teachers. She gave them bad reviews, moved a teacher with a bad leg to the 6th floor. We had another principal that decided women teachers who got pregnant were not a good fit so she gave bad reviews and fired them. CPS just settled that one after the feds sued.

We just let another guy go: "not a good fit." It wasn't only his introversion, it was his related absence of salability of his own work accomplishments. For better or worse, this is the modern workplace. Not only do our workers need to complete their work, they also need to "advertise" it. To put another way -- perception of work is almost as important as actual work in this environment.

If other managers do not perceive that Tim or Sue are doing anything, even if they are, it's almost as much of a management problem as John or Sally who really aren't doing anything.

Perception of work is more important than ACTUAL work? LOL. Maybe in a place with zero accountability. At some point, someone will notice the lack of productivity, and someone will eventually lose a job over it.

No, not more important. Almost as important. Lots of judgments are made based on perceptions at many workplaces.

Judgments aren't facts. Perceptions can, and often are, wrong.

You fired a guy for not tooting his own horn? Wow, also does that not indicate that your mgt team is incapable of knowing who brings actual value to the company? Worse, definitely worse, lol.

He couldn't function in front of internal customers. Couldn't sell the product (his work). Even though his work product was satisfactory, his inability to talk and chew gum at the same time was unacceptable to management.

You aren't being especially clear. By internal customers do you mean his own company, supervisors, mgt, etc? What sort of business needs workers to sell their own work to higher ups? If the work is satisfactory why does he need to 'sell it'?
