How were you treated by your boss or personnel the day you got fired and was it a supprise. Did they say they were sorry, do it at end of day, give you a package, or was the termination process done in a cold hearted, and heartless way. Did they let you confront your boss that day and what lame excuse or story did they give you. Did they make you leave right away or let you say goodby to everybody.
They said they were sorry, did it at the end of the day, tried to be business, but unfortunately the reason they had to lay me off was their lack of professionalism in the first place. If they had any business sense then they wouldn't be in the financial situation they are in. Confront him? why? Im not a child, that's immature. I was able to say "goodbye" to everyone I wanted to.
The last place I got fired from was well over a year ago. It was pretty ridiculous how they did it. I was out the day before because of some issues with my daughter, and I came in that morning and my log in for my computer and everything was taken off. The actual boss wouldn't even speak to me. She had the new Director of Nursing do it. And wouldn't even let me talk to her about it. They were pretty unprofessional also. The owner was a Filipino lady and most of the people who worked in the office were Filipino and they were pretty much able to get away with anything, but the rest of us got in trouble for things that we couldn't even control.
I had planned on leaving the company a few months later anyhow, so I was out of work for a month and a half.
Since my office is in Connecticut, I only had to be up there 2 days/week. Usually Monday and Wednesday - this was a Friday.
I ran to lunch at the local deli. Double parked the car, glanced at my BlackBerry that was in the front seat and said to myself "nobody will call within 3 minutes", and proceeded to run in for my sandwich. I got in the car and I saw I had one missed call with a voice mail. I played it and it was my boss. The call went like this...
"This is Vince, um, this isn't a pleasant phone call, so call me when you can, I want to do this quickly and effectively". I knew it was coming and I called him right away. He said executive management is scaling back, and all remote people (two of us) were being let go. "Don't come up to CT on Monday as your layoff is effective immediately". I was stunned. My yearly review was glowing, I was due for a nice raise in a matter of weeks.
I just recently found out I was replaced with his neighbors kid making half of what I was, but my reliable source said he is about to get canned for messing up on a daily basis.
What a spineless turd that guy is. I hope he suffers for the rest of his pathetic life.
All of our department worked in this small office in a large building. We all got Emailed meeting requests, which was during a time we had our normal staff meeting.
Half of them had us going to a meeting room on one floor. Half on another. People were weirded out, thinking the boss had made a mistake. I even said to the group, I bet we are getting laid off, which elicited a bunch of " you're dumb" comments.
Ok.. so my group walks into the one downstairs. We walk in, our boss is in there, and it was obvious she was crying. There were boxes of kleenex on the tables, unopened of course.
Come to find out, downstairs people got laid off, upstairs were told they were being kept but that a lot of changes were coming to the dept.
I was the only one not crying in mine, in fact, I was super excited. I got a lot of dirty looks, as I was beaming from ear to ear.
I have yet to be fired from a job, but an employer I had a few years ago was letting most of their long-time employees go. They were in the process of expanding so they were cutting corners where they could and the best place was to get rid of the 'old timers' who had full benefits, two or three weeks of vacation pay, and they could pay a new hire $5 or $6 dollars less an hour, etc. People were getting fired for being a few minutes late (literally three or four minutes). Another guy got fired because he simply put in a request for a new position and another was fired for an 'office prank' even though his prank was in retaliation to one played on him and was no where near as bad. The guys who played the prank on him were not fired, probably because they were paid substantially less.
Their main trick was to cut back an employees hours to around twenty-four a week, forcing the employee to quit. If they employee did not quit, then they were fired at around six months into the employees new work schedule. Both ways would effectively cause the denial of unemployment benefits. They were doing this to me.
All the while they kept telling me that it was temporary, but I know better. They were trying to force me to quit so one day, a few hours into my shift, I just got up and left. My manager on duty asked what I was doing and I told him that I was out of there. I felt bad for the guy because it was not his fault and he had to pick up the slack, but man, the look on his face as I was walking out the door was priceless.
First thing in the morning, computer was blocked up and the Supervisor told me when he came in what had happened the day before when I was out for an appointment, 30% company RIF, world wide. It was done very mechanically, un feeling, no allowance to say adiu to friends just clear your desk and be gone, with an escort assigned to watch ones every move.
My direct Supervisor, However was great, even took sometime off in the middle of the day to help me bring my personal office chair(I had supplied) to my home(he has a truck I had a sedan) and said the most heartfelt goodbye from an associate I have ever heard of and a high praise compliment, he said, he had told the Axe Team from the company head office "...he wished he had had 10 more like me, because of my work ethic, rather than all of the rest of the local 30% dismissed at the same time..." for reasons mentioned but I believe are my personal treasures alone
I was literally fired by voice mail as I was walking up the stairs to quit my job, it was a control freak micro-manager that I was working for, he wanted to know where I was and what I was doing at all times for a sales job that required calling on referral sources and clients, plus hated the fact that I was hired by his boss and was more qualified for his job then he was. We did not get along well at all, and despite the fact that he could not actually do my job, he felt the need to constantly tell me how to do it.
It drove him nuts that I had taken 3 afternoons off over a 2 week period with obvious trumped up excuses on why I needed off, and would not tell him what I was up to. Finally it came to a head when I went to lunch with an executive VP of the new company I was going to work as a manager for, where they hand delivered my job offer, and I was running 15 minutes late back to the office.
The manager called me as I was walking into the building and left me a message telling me that since I was refusing to follow his rules that it was just not going to work out on either end. I listened to it as I was walking into the office, and was literally laughing as I walked into his office and thanked him for making it easier on me as I was wanted a few days off to decompress after dealing with his crap and my new job wanted me to start ASAP.
Before I even got home his boss the man who had hired me was blowing up my phone, with an offer to work out of a different office, and reporting directly to him, but by that point I was over that company and had no interest in dealing with a company that was going to make it so hard to actually conduct business on a professional basis.
so I got fired basically because they found a cheaper resource to do my work.. It was a call to the office I was let go and offered an extra two weeks pay, I still showed up for the two weeks just to make a smooth transition. In retrospect it was naive kindness, I look back and my boss was a major prick. He'd get angry and throw stuff, storm out of doors, it was an insane environment. It was also a turning point in my career; best and worse job to ever happen to me.
