I found a job on Monster and it says:

Please send a cover letter, with salary requirements, and resume to jobs@companyx.com

Do I write the cover letter in the email itself or attach it as a separate page in front of the resume (Word format)? Also, what's the best way to address the cover letter since the name of the HR manager and/or hiring manager is unknown?

If you do not know the name, you could always address it as To Whom It May Conern. I would type up a cover letter seperate and attach it to the email.

I agree with annerk. Unfortunately, TWIMC is viewed as lacking initiative these days. Further, if you know the name of the company, do some research to find a name in the HR Department and cc them. With just a little bit more work, you can figure out what their email address is and copy them.
