Cannot bother to go through the entire thread so I apologize if this has been said. "American" sounds better than "United Statesian" and that's really what it comes down to besides the fact that I doubt anybody really cares.

Although it is the most powerful country in the American continent, I believe that this tag is wrong and discriminative and economical power should not be a distinction between countries. Ever since I was little, I always questioned my father, mother and friends in, why do the people living in the U.S.A. get to be called Americans and all the others are central or south Americans? From my point of view the tag is insolent and ignorant. What do you think? Please state your opinions and let this be a friendly and peaceful discussion.
Ever tried to say United Statesian?

Somebody must, they started this thread!! I'm sure somewhere, the truth will come out, that we stoled the name, from another country and they want it back!!

There is only one nation on the planet that has the right to call it self "America"; the flag of that nation looks like this:

Arrogant? Yes... But you have the right to be arrogant if that flag was flown here:

here:

or even here:

That is Everest people.

Good ol' US of A. Remember! North and South America was named after the US. Not the other way around.

Candadians used to complain about that to me a lot. I always told them to go visit Iran or Bagdhad and see what they say when a angry mob asks them if they are "American". I'm sure most would shy away from that title VERY quickly.

Perhaps these chaps have a bit too much time on their hands.

United Statesian is stupid, beyond the obvious reasons, because the USA is NOT the only 'United States' in North America! Our neighbor to the south is Estados Unidos Mexicanos, the United States of Mexico! Those suggesting that Americans should call themselves United Statesians are telling more about their own ignorance than about ours.

We have the name of the continent in our name. I'm sure if any other country did that, their citizens would be named after the continent.

I believe the term "Americans" is derived from the name the United states of AMERICA, rather than North America itself, which is why it makes sense to call people from the U.S. Americans. Canada is not called Canada of America and mexico is not called Mexico of America, if they were i'd agree with the argument. Now if people from the U.S. were called North Americans, then i'd see that point of view.
