Agree with the most posts from today. Would be the most awesome city ever if it was an actual city and not a prime example of why car-centered American suburban cities must be left in history books as an example of the effects of corruption and bad planning. Weather and location are great, but not the rest.
Some foreign expats really DO think LA is Paradise, and wouldn't ever go back to the "old country". You don't believe me? then read this (it's partly written in French, but easy to understand): Ma vie a Los Angeles
the first thing i associate with L.A. is the LARGE Hispanic population. When I visited L.A. it felt like a kind of Mexico-City because the majority of the population there is of Mexican/Puerto Rican ancestry.

Mostly Mexican and Central American, lived there for 3 years and met two Puerto Ricans and both of them you wouldn´t have been able to pick out of a crowd from other white people.
lots of hispanic people, nice weather, girls that would do ANYTHING to look good, even look horrible!, lots of traffic, gang violence, stuck up rich people that would step over anyone to get more money
LA is kinda the media capital of the world. This media says that its a rich young beautiful town full of free spirited creative people who eat the best food and have the best nightlife.
Lets be honest. For a city that large, in comparison, people go to bed early and think what they are told to think by their own media machine.
First of all, I have to admit I've never been to LA. For me, the city is not that interesting, compared to NYC, SFO, or Chicago.
I don't know why, but the only things that comes to my mind about LA are Hollywood (kind of artificial living, super richs..), traffic jam, air pollution and a very nice coastline. I love the californian coast and I have driven from Oregon down to Hearst Castle, but not all the way down to LA. I also love SFO with its rich culture and european influence but neither the LA skyline nor the huge suburbs attract me.
I'd guess there is a grain of truth to a lot of the things we see on TV.
Gangs, I'm sure they are there but thats not exclusive to LA. I think it probably got hyped a lot by the crack epidemic in the 80's-90's.
Lots of Hispanics of course but I can step outside and hear salsa music at any given time here in Arkansas. I'm sure there are more in LA, I'm just saying it's not like I've never been around hispanic people.
I'm used to car culture but I'm a little hesitant about driving on the LA freeways.
For everyone that makes it big in Hollywood I'm sure there are lot of sad stories.
I imagine the weather is great and the beaches are crowded. I've heard it's an hour from tall mountains and skiing.
It's supposed to be very difficult to own a home unless you are loaded. You hear a lot of people who I suspect are extremely well off talking on these forums, but I think there are probably a lot of normal working people there too.
I'm looking forward to seeing what it is really like, I get to visit later this year.
