I have noticed a lot of people think Texas is quintessentially American which is interesting for a state that has billed itself with the catchphrase, "Texas, it's like a whole OTHER country."
Don't get me wrong, despite having always maintained a distance from the United States, calling itself, the 'Lone Star State', and even having been an independent republic, Texas looms in the overall American picture, but from an American perspective, I wouldn't call it quintessentially American. If anything it deviates from the American experience the way America itself deviates from commonwealth countries in the Anglo nation paradigm.
Sometimes, when we have had a Texan president, some people have the uneasy notion that a foreigner is leading the country. :-)
I'll be darned...I thought President Obama was born in Hawaii.
Just to clarify, the phrase "Lone Star State" wasn't created to distance Texas from the United States. It was meant to distinguish itself from the Mexican province of Coahuila y Tejas (two star flag) when we gained our independence from Mexico.
After living and working overseas for 20+ years, I do agree with most posters that California, Texas, and Florida are the most well known states. But more than any of these, I'd say people recognize New York the most -- of course, they are referring to New York City, not the state.
New York - probably everyone knows the state too
California - famous sun state, silicon valley, porn valley
Florida - popular retirement location
New Jersey - the Sopranos made it famous, I guess most people know
Minnesota - many Finns settled here
Washington - Seattle, grunge, many Finns settled here
Texas - famous since the Western movies, G W Bush, Dallas (city and TV series)
Alaska - colder than here, belonged to Russia
Hawaii - famous, hula-hoops, beaches, ukulele
Alabama - some songs, also Finnish, feature this state
Cali, Texas, & NY are no brainers but I was surprised so many mentioned Alaska & Hawaii....maybe because they are not connected physically to the other 48?
I was surprised so many mentioned my state of Washington as most of the people that I come in contact with around the world only think of DC when I mention that I'm from Washington state and can't come to grips with the fact we are on opposite sides of the country...so I just say I'm from Seattle....and most have at least heard of it because of either grunge, Bill Gates & MS, or Starbucks.
Oh my god I seen like 10 classmates there this summer
