California, Texas, Florida, and Hawaii. New York more as the city than the state, also the city of Chicago and not so much Illinois. Also DC though technically not a state, but close enough.

I agree.

In no particular order, if I had to choose the top four, I'd think the US states with the most universal name recognition are New York (for NYC), California, Texas, and Hawaii. As far as Florida goes, I'd think most throughout the world know of Disney World, but I'm doubtful that most in the world could tell you that Disney World is in Florida. Similarly, I think most might know of Las Vegas (but maybe I'm being overly generous) and this might be a good reason to put Nevada, but I don't know if most would be able to name the state itself. Some could say the same about New York, but at least New York is in both the city and state name

I was surprised so many mentioned my state of Washington as most of the people that I come in contact with around the world only think of DC when I mention that I'm from Washington state and can't come to grips with the fact we are on opposite sides of the country...so I just say I'm from Seattle....and most have at least heard of it because of either grunge, Bill Gates & MS, or Starbucks.
If you asked me 10 years ago, I probably wouldn't have said Hawaii. But having lived in Hawaii for 3.5 years and having traveled the world somewhat extensively, I was shocked at how much of an international tourist destination that Hawaii is and how many people (yes, anecdotal) know about the islands. I think what helps is that you've had shows like Hawaii 5-0, which I argue helped to increase awareness of the state.

Yeah, and I'd say those states are probably the only ones with most name recognition,
it goes quickly down from there.

I would put Alaska at the highest level with California and Texas etc.

Except for New York (people knew the city but not the state) this matches my experience. While in Australia I found it funny people associated Texas with the entire southern U.S. Depending what part of the world you go, certain states profile increase. For example, Georgia was well known in Ghana due to Atlanta being a popular city amongst the population. Though like New York, people knew more of the city than the state.
