the Dutch delivered one of the worst defeats in the Royal Navy's history, and one of the worst suffered by the British military in 1667.
Some say its the most serious defeat it has ever had in its home waters.
But outside of the Netherlands, how widely has Dutch ever been spoken?

That gives you an idea of the actual standing of the country compared with England.

Good point here. England, Spain and France have left there mark more than any other countries in this regard with Portugal not too far behind.

I definitely give the Dutch credit for the 1600's. The rise of the Netherlands was spectacular. The thing is that France and England were still bigger and more powerful.

By raw numbers not per capita.

Language was never on the agenda, trade was the priority (VOC, First multinational corporation in the world).

Mongolia was at the height of it's power in the 1200s. The 1800s where cut up between England and Japan. 1900s between the nazis in the first half and soviets in the second. after 9/11 and the iraq war the US lost its soft power and all but in practice gave up its title to china meaning the 21st century is theirs. that leaves the 1990s for US leadership in the world. Yup, we had a total of one decade. Still, it was pretty great one at that.
