Need more sources than just a "politician", people who are known to say things that aren't true.

This is the latest I've heard as well. I think we have a ways to go before we overtake the UK.

This is because of the huge drop in value of the British pound. Currencies can really warp comparisons. Canada's Loonie has lost 25& of it's value in the last 7 years but that doesn't mean Canadians all of a sudden took a 25% pay cut or the economy shrunk by 25%.

When comparing countries using the world's reserve currency as a measure is pretty disingenuous. At a minimum they should use a "basket of currencies" and not the US dollar.

Default Role Model

It is impressive to see how only one state in the United States is so economically prosperous, at least in numbers. I can only hope that my own country (Puerto Rico) sees to places like California in hopes of getting our of our crippling debt crisis.

California isn't the 5th largest economy in the world, as California isn't a national entity but a subsidiary of the internal market called the United States of America. If California were independent, it would not be the 5th largest economy, as it wouldn't be a part of the massive US economy.

it would still have close trade ties with the US. As a state they give more tax dollars back the government than they recieve
