I chose Canada because it is the closest to US for travel to visit family & friends by car if need be.
If family or friends were not in the equation I'd choose the UK

Yes. An alternative lifestyler in Northern California would most likely have more in common with a fellow alternative lifestyler in northern NSW than either do with someone from a more conservative rural/farming community in central Qld or Kansas.

I would rather not be a subject of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

Australians and Canadians are no more subject to the Queen's actions than Americans are required to pledge to submit to the edicts of a religious theocracy ("One nation under God").

The UK is different, as there the Queen actually does have a degree of power and authority and plays a more active role in government.

You'll have to pardon the guffaws from all the other commonwealth nations who would ALL agree, actually being a subject of Queen Elizabeth would be 12 levels of improvement over who you're presently a "subject" of.

No she really, she doesn't. I would be interested to see the last time the Queen actually 'played an active role in government', and by that I mean REALLY 'played an active role in government'.

I am a Canadian citizen. Thus, I am not a subject of HM, Queen Elizabeth II.
