Let's stress the ignorant part. I personally think an area like Sonora would be Mexico's stereotype.

Why is Sichuan a stereotype of China? Most people probably think of Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong. Or some mountains with rice paddies.

Not sure why the world thinks of the US Midwest as a typical example? Maybe they think all the US is one big region of grasslands, flat as a pancake and farms? I doubt it is and first thought of them.

I'd say it's the California mystic and dreaming as a US stereotype first. Manhattan .... no one should see as typical and probably NYC and LA both come close in cities mentioned first. Texas might be a distant reference for the US. Especially rather then the Midwest that Texas is not part of.

All just IMO if I get the thread intensions right.

Cartagena is a Caribbean city with a very particular history. Colombia has other regions (Amazon, Plains, Andes, Pacific, Antillean, etc). Andeans make up for 70% of the population.

Medellin and Antioquia are strongly stereotyped inside of Colombia (by the other regions), they are very regionalistic. Non Paisa Colombians associate Antioquia with Pablo Escobar, Uribe, drug cartels etc.

Manhattan, indeed New York City as a whole is a very popular stereotype of an American city. The skyline, Statue of Liberty etc. are quintessentially American. The sprawling urban landscape complete with the freeways of Los Angeles and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge are other American stereotypes.

Beyond that, California and Texas are worlds onto themselves.

You?
Give a motivation, at least.
