Inspired by a similar thread in the US forum about which state’s defining traits are an amalgamation of two other “parental” states, I thought it would be fun to have one for the world’s countries. All in the spirit of good humor, of course.

Mine:

England x Germany = Japan

England x USA = Canada

China x Japan = Taiwan

Any others?

I would say USA and Japan = Hawaii (although not a country but it would be like it)
Japan and England = Fiji
China and England = Singapore
Germany and Switzerland = Austria
France and Netherlands = Belgium
Canada and Sweden = Iceland
Russia and Poland = Ukraine
Turkey and Greece = Cyprus
Greece and Italy = Malta

LOL. It's good this is all in the spirit of good fun, so in recognition of intended good fun I still have to say no to the above amalgamations. They aren't possible.

USA and Canada are the same age as each other so USA can't be a parent of Canada nor does it have enough influence to be a parental figure. Besides which, Canada is already known to be the offspring of the UK and France, and USA is the offspring of the UK and Spain (and a few others ). Canada and USA could be considered siblings born of the same mother but having different fathers.

Japan bears no traits of either England or Germany.

And China x Japan! no way that would be an insult to both of those countries as well as Taiwan. If you knew about the bitter history, racial resentments and wars of the past between China and Japan you could never reasonably say that together they are parental states of any other country.

.

Opinions of best parings for offsprings and parents will vary according to one’s perception of course, and the traits one focuses on. I focused on cultural traits that were particularly apparent for me, that may not be as strong today with our rapidly evolving world.

However, simply:

England: Etiquettes, reserved, law-abiding x Germany: Strong work ethic, precise, reserved, historically highly militaristic, slightly OCD?= Japan: All those traits

England: See traits above + ongoing monarchy influence X USA: Consumer-driven pop culture, frontier vibe, immigrant influence = Anglo Canada (sorry, should have specified)

China: Group collective/authoritarian social and government structures, Han influence, merchant oriented, some architectural x Japan: Cleanliness, order, some architectural = Taiwan

As with real babies, the offspring countries’ blended traits will vary in the degree and extent to which the parental traits are expressed.

To be fair Taiwan was a Qing territory then a Japanese colony. It's not really a stretch to say China and Japan are parental states to Taiwan.

The only problem is that China is a major piece of **** so these days we try our best to disassociate with China. If it were a real parent it would be one people call domestic violence hotline on.

Germany and England being parental states to Japan is laughable though. Japan is an older and larger country than both and have nothing in common with those two beyond some superficial observations. The only countries that are somewhat similar to Japan are Korea and Taiwan, its two former colonies, and even among us the similarities are extremely limited. It's one of the most unique countries in the world.

I think you’re taking it too literally. The entire premise is to identify characteristically defining national traits between two different countries and identify a third country that shares those traits. Bonus points for if the countries involved may not be obvious, such as this example.

There’s a reason that quintessentially British novel on British class, manners, and society pre-WW2, The Remains of the Day, was so insightfully written by a Japanese-British person.
