You know, I've really tried to let this poem sink in, and allow me to see why it is an all-time great. I really have tried. However, I just don't see why this poem is so special. Yes, the imagery that comes to mind is pretty and refined, the faces in the crowd, the wet, black bough, are all interesting pieces of imagery. And yes, I know it started the movement Imagism, but really take a moment to look at the two lines and see if this should be on the level of longer and more complex poems.
Honestly, there isn't much there. It's two lines, one of the lines containing a mere six words. I get the imagery is supposed to take it above the text, but while the imagery is good, it's not that good. The imagery does not really tell a story in my opinion, and seems fragmented and not cohesive. I am of a firm belief that any of us on this forum could write a two-line poem with just as much imagery and finesse as this.
I guess I'm just failing to see how a two line poem with a some imagery can turn into this famous piece of work that everyone knows! Does anyone else agree?
I kept thinking how many times the word imagery was used in the op and how come I didn't remember a two line poem everyone knows. How many would I ask before someone said something besides, "What?"
It's probably one of those things that supposed to be a great work because someone once said it was...and no one wants to admit that it really doesn't move them in any way.
Well, it seems the City-Data Writing Forum crowd isn't shy about that.
Never heard of it but I like it. Very evocative of....something. I'm trying to imagine what it would mean to me if I didn't know the title with the Metro reference.
