It's a better/more concise way of saying "despite what I just said". Probably the best rhetorical device for facilitating nuance in discussion...this phrase is a personal favorite of mine.

It's always annoyed me, right along with "'nuff said".

It's often used as a way out of something previously stated/said/written/expressed.

For that reason alone I see it as a "cop out" phrase.

I hate when people say that (along with "having said that", which is pretty much the same thing)!! It's like nails on a chalkboard. It's basically an annoying and pretentious way of saying "but" or "however".

I also hate when people say "honestly...". like, ohhh, you're privying me to the truth? how special do I feel. because everything else that comes out of your mouth is obviously a lie then, right? just another unnecessary and pretentious word.
