It's actually a mispronunciation (a dialect of sorts). In parts of the Midwest/Great Lakes, slow drawn out speech was common, and not a Southerin thing far as I know. It's something different. Slow speech adds syllables. Where I grew up it was pronounced "Saturin" "patterin" "preganent" even "menesturation" and "pantery". It's the opposite of Jersey speed speech.

Well, my jar in the fridge say's "Applesauce". I don't think I've ever seen it as two words.

But then I never ate it while in Europe, and haven't yet been to Canada, so...

Well BB, here is a photo of a jar of " Apple Sauce " in Canada. I hope this helps in avoiding culture shock

Be prepared for " purées de pommes " as well.
