Hi everyone. My husband was recently offered 2 jobs and we need to make a decision by tomorrow on which one we are going to take We currently live outside of Houston.

Option #1 is Kemmerer - Itty bitty town. Longer winters. Further from family. AMAZING housing prices. I'm worried that I might be too isolated and we won't be able to sell the house since the market is smaller.

Option #2 is Douglas - Bigger town. Location is EXACTLY where we want. We might be living in a tent - houses are $50,000-70,000 more expensive. We can afford it, but my goal was to be completely out of debt in 8 years and that won't happen if we move here. I'm worried that if we buy now, the housing market will fall since they seem to be in a boom period right now.

What else should I know consider/know about these towns?

Thanks!

Personally, I wouldn't live in the SW corner of WY... just not a place I've ever enjoyed, thus Douglas would be my choice between those two, though obviously I have my own biases and they aren't the same as everyone else. And while it seems counter-intuitive (and hard to go backwards), if you're afraid of a boom market for housing, just rent. Actually, probably a good idea to rent for a year in Either case.

Best of luck with your choice.

Good advice, i would rent at first. Get the lay of the town and explore, if you like it go from there. Not a lot of money lost. I am researching to move in the future and i plan to rent at first.
Good luck.

Douglas is a nice little town, a half hour from Casper, has a nice river running through town, close to a large lake. It would be my choice between the two.

There's less wind in Kemmerer than Douglas

There's a boom going on in Douglas??

I would rent.
Both have good and bad things. If you are a shopper, go to kemmerer. SLC is 1.5 hours away. Same with the airport.

Default You've set a goal, keep it

If you've gone to the trouble to set a goal to be debt free in eight years but let the first "opportunity" to dissuade you from keeping it, how big of a goal was it to begin with?

My wife and I were finally debt free two years ago (paid off the last of the cars) and have managed to accumulate over $30k cash in those two years. Debt free will be a burden gone worth more than any "opportunity" of good versus very, very good. Choose Kemmerer and adjust. Take a lot of weekend vacations up to the Tetons. With no debt in the not too distant future, you will have many more options.

Good luck.

Thank you so much for all the replies! This decision is so much harder because I've never seen either of these places. We were hoping to have at least a couple weeks to decide so that I could make the trip and be better informed.

I guess I should give a bit more info. We really have two goals. #1 is to be closer to family. My family is in Denver, my husband's family is in Billings, MT. My husband grew up in Wyoming (Mountain View, Thermopolis, and Douglas). We are currently living in Texas, so really anywhere in Wyoming puts us closer to family, but Douglas is smack dab in the middle and makes for an easy weekend trip to visit the grandparents.

Goal #2 is debt free. Thank you Wardendresden for reminding me how much you can do without debt! (do you happen to follow Dave Ramsey?). This would have been so much easier if he was only offered one of the jobs, LOL.
