I'll be visiting Charlotte in March and would like to get a feel for Ft. Mill. I have been there once before but only to see the Charlotte Knights play a baseball game so my trip to Ft. Mill basically consisted of getting on and off of a parkway enroute to the stadium which was beautiful bye the way.
What is the best way to see Ft. Mill...is their a Main Street with Shops and indoor/outdoor places for Lunch? Any must see sights or nice parks to drive by? Is Lake Wylie worth driving by? Not sure how close to Ft. Mill it is.
Thanks.
There is a Main St. but it's very quiet and I've never found much there to hold my interest. There's a big park by by Springs Industries. Fort Mill really lacks a central place with commerce and outdoor seating... At least I think it does. I haven't seen much in my 3 years here, so if I'm wrong someone please enlighten me as well!
As for Lake Wylie, there are a couple of good parks on the lake, but with the drought as bad as it is, the lake is depressingly low.
There are several shops and restaurants in Baxter Village which you might enjoy. I have driven by main street in Fort Mill but never stopped because there doesn't seem to be much there. It would be great if there was!
We live in Tega Cay on Lake Wylie and even though the lake is low it still may be worth a look from one of the local parks. With the weather being so warm we have picniced at the beach a lot lately.
Baxter Village for shopping/dining, Windjammer Park in Tega Cay for a view of the Lake, there is a city park on 160 in Fort Mill proper that is nice, Leroy Springs recreational complex (like a YMCA) has day passes, and Anne Springs Close Greenway - for hiking, horses, etc. My daughter loves to pet the horses over by the "Dairy Barn" in the Greenway.
Fort Mill city is an empty shell as far as I'm concerned. The "real" Fort Mill downtown is now Baxter Village. Main St in downtown has nothing of interest to see. There are a few cool old houses in town, but that's about it.
If you head over to the eastern edge of town, there are some things worth checking out in Charlotte. Ballantyne Village is a very short drive from there as well there is a new family fun center nearby.
If the day is nice and warm (which is likely in March), a great place to sit in the sun is Windjammer Park, in Tega Cay. Tega Cay is a lakeside community next to Fort Mill. Windjammer has a large picnic area, a sandy beach, and is a fun place to hang out.
Windjammer Park in Tega Cay is nice. If it's warm out, stop by the Peach Stand for some Ice Cream, it's always the best. The Greenway is pretty neat, but otherwise, not too much around. Baxter has some shops, but Main St. isnt much of anything.
