Hoping for some guidance,

DH has a job offer in S Charlotte, the recruiter mentioned Fort Mills to us and so this is where we will rent for a bit before deciding to buy (still have a house to sell here in Las Vegas). Just wondering which elementary school is the best or at very good in the Fort Mills/Tega Cay area.

Our son will be starting Kindergarden in the Fall and we want to make sure we have all our ducks in a row prior to our move/start of the school year.

Also, are there any recommendations as far as apartments go or rental homes?. We are looking for safe areas within a good school district. The DH will be in town next week and will be checking out housing, any leads are greatly appreciated.

Just can't believe this is all happening so fast!!!!

I would say anything you find in Fort Mill or Tega Cay is in a safe district. All the schools are good - I hear maybe Orchard Park has had some problems, but I don't know my youngest graduated high school here in 2004..... Gold Hill has consistently had the highest scores on tests etc. You may want to make sure of availability - some of the schools are *full* I think.

We just moved to Tega Cay 12 days ago, and we are zoned to Gold Hill Elementary. However, since the district has capped the enrollment there as well as at Orchard Park, my 3rd grader and my Kindergartener will be attending Riverview Elementary for 1 year until both of the new elementary schools are built. If yo umove to the Fort Mill area, chances are your son will be attending whatever elementary he's enrolled in only for 1 yr.

grannynancy & Sophie5,

Thank you guys so much for the helpful information. I went to the school district website and read a bit more on the different schools.

One thing I did not see was if there is a fee to be paid for all day kindergarten. Here in Las Vegas we have to pay $300 per month if we want all day kindergarten (9:15am-2:15pm), otherwise the regular hours are 9:15am-11:15am. Also, are there any afterschool programs for children who's parents work until 5:00pm?. Thank you!!

Vegas Grl

All of the elementary schools run from 7:45 to 2:20. They are all day. The only one that is half of the day is the 4yr old pre-k program and that is a limited class. There are plenty of programs for after school....local daycares that pick up from the school and transfer the children to their facility.

Carolina Kids, Field of Dreams, Kids R Kids and Appleseed are just a few. The Flyers program which is run by the Leroy Springs Complex is another program, as well as some local churches.

I don't know when you will be arriving but have your Real Estate Agent or Property Manager of the apartment complex you will be renting from send you a copy of the Fort Mill Focus Magazine. There is SO much information in there and phone numbers you can call and hopefully get some "feeling" as to the places you may be dealing with.

Good Luck!

I haven't heard anything negative about Orchard Park other than the fact that it's a full school requiring a freeze. But as far as teachers and administration I haven't heard anything negative.
