Description: For those interested in jets, bombers, and anything that flies, the Southern Museum of Flight is the first stop in Alabama to get your fix. The 68,000-square-foot facility located, appropriately enough, near the airport, holds more than 75 aircraft and numerous associated aviation items, covering the 20th century’s winged history. Soviet MiG, “Blackbird” spy plane, Wright Flyer, B-25 Bomber, biplanes, helicopters, and assorted experimental aircraft are just a few of the pieces on display at the museum. Popular with all ages are the flight simulators that give visitors a chance to gain a first-hand sense of what flying is all about. Of special interest is a diorama exhibit of Alabama’s Tuskegee Airmen, the United State’s first black military pilots. The museum is also home to the Alabama Aviation Hall of Fame.
