Description: You don’t have to be a golfer to know the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, an assortment of 468 holes of championship-level golf at 11 sites across the state. The brainchild of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama, the trail began in the 1980s as a way to diversify the state’s pension fund while improving Alabama’s tourism offerings. He succeeded on both counts: The 100 miles of golf courses designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in some of the state’s most beautiful locations has become well known in golfing circles and destination for aficionados of all levels of play.

Description: A collection of some 45 historical structures from dogtrot cabins to the beautifully preserved Sadler Plantation House, Tannehill Ironworks is a lovely little state park (well, if you can call 1,500 acres “little”) full of activities, events, and attractions. Civil War reenactments, a dulcimer festival, rock and gem shows, trade days, and woodcarvers show are just a few of the activities that keep the park busy year-round. A central attraction is the Alabama Iron and Steel Museum, and of course, the Tannehill Furnaces, one of the nation’s best-preserved Civil War landmarks. If you’re looking to rent a restored log cabin from the 1800s, this is the place.

The park’s petting zoo is the perfect place to bring the kids for a healthy dose of interaction with nature. The petting zoo features goats, sheep, and other animals, providing a rural farm-like setting that is often fascinating to children more used to an urban/suburban environment. Open Wed through Sun.
