2. Napa Valley Railway Inn

City: Yountville, CA
Category: Accommodations
Telephone: (707) 944-2000
Address: 6523 Washington Street

Description: This is probably the best lodgings deal in the tony town of Yountville. Sure, the curious might come clomping down the boardwalk between the two sets of railcars, hoping for a look inside the rooms, but this is where I’d opt to stay in Yountville, if only for the novelty of it. The rooms, all in historic railroad cars on the original track of the Napa Valley Railroad, are luxuriously appointed and filled with light. It’s a short walk to the world-class restaurants and just steps to the shops at V Marketplace. Guests also have complimentary use of a nearby fitness center, in case you don’t do enough walking while you’re exploring the town.

Description: In the middle of Yountville (but a block away from most of the traffic) is this French-style country inn. The 100-year-old main building has 2-foot-thick stone walls, terra-cotta tile, and a gas fireplace in the brick parlor. Two other structures—the Old Bakery (a working bakery in the 1970s) and the carriage house—bring the total number of rooms to 13. You get a gourmet breakfast (or breakfast in bed if you’d rather) and a jar of homemade cookies in the lobby. A swimming pool, spa tub, and mountain bikes are available for guest use. Maison Fleurie is part of Four Sisters Inns, a group of nine bed-and-breakfast establishments, most of them on the California coast.
