One of them is in the St. Matthews neighborhood, near Louisville’s two most popular malls. The selection of natural and organic foods runs the gamut from canned and dried goods to fresh produce and hand-cut meats. The dizzying selection of cheeses and gourmet items is enough to make the most jaded of foodies swoon.

Description: After the River Falls Mall closed several years ago and converted into a huge Outdoor World, Green Tree Mall on the Lewis and Clark Parkway became the only mall left across the river. Although many businesses have gravitated to the newer Veterans Parkway down the road, the Green Tree Mall remains the biggest shopping attraction in Clarksville. More than 70 stores and restaurants can be found on one floor, including a Dillard’s, Sears, JCPenney, and Burlington Coat Factory. Open daily, but store and restaurant hours vary.

Description: Located on Outer Loop just down from Preston Highway in Okolona, Jefferson Mall is easily accessible from I-65, I-265, and I-264. With almost a million square feet of leasing space, Jefferson Mall is the shopping center of choice for most residents of the South End. Description: Located on Shelbyville Road just off of the Watterson Expressway in St. Matthews, this mall was the first true indoor mall in Louisville; today, it is still one of the most popular shopping centers in the Louisville area, although traffic in that part of town can get frustrating (by Louisville standards, at least) during peak hours. At over a million square feet, the Mall St. Matthews has more than 130 stores, including Aeropostale, Ann Taylor Loft, Arhaus, Aveda, Brooks Brothers, Brookstone, Harold’s, Pottery Barn, and Williams-Sonoma. Description: Considered by many to be the most prestigious of the local malls, Oxmoor Center is located in St. Matthews, just down Shelbyville Road from the Mall St. Matthews. The drive from downtown Louisville takes about 10 minutes. Oxmoor Center is home to more than 100 specialty shops and eateries, including American Eagle Outfitters, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Gymboree, Banana Republic, California Pizza Kitchen, Old Navy, and Pottery Barn Kids. Description: The Summit is Louisville’s newest shopping mall. It is located off of Brownsboro Road in the East End, about a 20-minute drive from the city center. With nearly 400,000 square feet of retail space, it is home to more than 50 stores and restaurants, including Pier 1, Gap, Express, Barnes & Noble, and Bath and Body Works. A manicured plaza area offers lovely plantings, unique sculptures, architectural details, and conversational seating areas. Open from 10 a.m to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

Description: Centrally located in the Highlands, this eclectic shop is the place for avid readers who don’t want to spend a fortune on new books. Simply take in your old paperback—you can buy them there for $1—and trade it in for a different one when you’ve finished it. It works the same way for CDs and video games. On-street parking is scarce on that stretch of Bardstown Road, so you may need to drive around for a bit.

Description: Located at the corner of First and Main on the ground floor of a parking garage, the Cressman Center serves as a downtown showcase for the University of Louisville’s Hite Institute of Art. Contemporary art with a strong glass component is on display, and visitors are meant to acquire an understanding of the process behind the products they’re contemplating. Walk in the door and look one way, and you see students at work in the hot shop; look in the other direction and you’ll find the gallery with their finished pieces on display. The building is part of the new wave of green buildings to go up in downtown Louisville, and heat from the glass workshop is recycled to warm the building.

Even though they’re only open three days a week, Hertz says, “If you drive by and the gates are open, come on in!”
