Description: This resort is almost a village unto itself. The 23-acre estate, which takes its name from a Native American word that means “crescent on the water,” comprises a slew of buildings, including one built in 1740. Each of the rooms and suites has views of Pleasant Bay, Round Cove, or the woods and is furnished in Early American or country pine. So exquisite is the decor that many rooms have won national design awards. Tennis buffs can stay in one of the garden view villas, just steps away from four Har-Tru clay tennis courts. The inn also has its own dock and offers a sailing program for novices to salty-dog sailors. (The inn even has a rental fleet of Hobie Cats, Sunfish, and kayaks.) If you’re not in the mood for salt water, take a dip in the awesome heated pool, recently renovated to include a dramatic entry, a new Jacuzzi, and a boardwalk of Brazilian wood. Golfers will be happy to learn the Wequassett is affiliated with the exclusive nearby Cape Cod National Golf Club, allowing guests to arrange for tee times at the private course. Among the inn’s other amenities are dining options from gourmet (Twenty-eight Atlantic) to everyday (Thoreau’s and the seasonal Outer Bar and Grille and LiBAYtion, a second outdoor bar.) Parents will appreciate the children’s fun club, which offers camp-style activities for kids from 4 to 12 (in July and August only). The staff here is attentive but far from stuffy, and a concierge is available to help you with everything from dinner reservations to fishing excursions. The Wequassett is open from Apr through Nov.
